My First Week In Japan
– Downtown Kyoto

Highlights from my first week in Japan! It's been a blast. Explored Kyoto, moved in to my dorm, made a ton of international buddies. Already improving my Japanese and learning so much about the culture and people from all over the world.

Dropped doom scrolling on my phone and picked up journaling again. Enjoying the free time from transitioning from DU crazy finals to the spacing here. Also, the USD to yen rn is crazy, so I feel like a rich person.

Japan I have found, is the land of paperwork and contractions. Don't walk up the escalators, but do. Don't bike on the sidewalk, but everyone does. Don't bring girls back to the dorm... 😳

I have been impressed by the busy yet quietness of Japanese society. The trust it has in itself and each other is unmatched. No need to ever lock a bike here, or worry about someone stealing your dropped wallet.

I have found that in general, once they realize you care about their language and customs, most locals are quite helpful to foreigners. They are really interested when I ask them for help or questions, and I've started up quite a few conversations with people I've met out while exploring.

During our dorm move in and orientation week, the local fire department visited and went over fire safety protocols, what to do in emergencies, and covered a wide variety of responses to natural disasters. They brought their cute little fire truck, and even made every student practice using the fire extinguishers. Strangely in Japan, they shoot just plain water (at least I think) that is pressurized, and don't dispose foam. I can only wonder how effective they actually are...
I'll keep y'all posted, until then, またね!
