Hiroshima Trip Day One
– Downtown Hiroshima, Japan

Day one of three on my trip with Alex to Hiroshima. We took the shinkansen from Kyoto to Hiroshima station, which took about 2 hours. From there, we decided to walk towards the A-Bomb dome and explored as we did so.

We observed the dome, and took our time walking around the peace garden. We made our way to the flame of peace, which represents the ongoing efforts of nuclear demilitarization and world peace. The clock in the fountain video depicts 8:15 AM, the exact time the bomb detonated approximately 550 feet above the city.

We moved on to the peace memorial museum, which was quite the harrowing experience for myself. I knew I would be emotional moving through such heavy history, but I was greatly touched by the exhibit; and felt a sadness deeper than I have in a long time. It's easy to talk about events such as these in candid terms using statistics and dates, but when you connect each victim's name to their face, a real person who had hopes, dreams, and a family, it's much more impactful.

Afterwards, Alex and I visited Hiroshima castle and a temple in it's courtyard. The view from the top was quite amazing, and I tried some Sakura ice cream. We meandered past a large public garden on the way towards our hostel, and did some contemplating while we enjoyed the scenery.

For lunch I tried real okinomiyaki (a Hiroshima specialty) which was delicious, and yakisoba. For dinner, I had some onomichi ramen with karaage and shochu. Much lighter broth than the tonkatsu I prefer, but still rich enough to fill me up.
